An Indianapolis mother lost her life, and her boyfriend has been arrested on charges of reckless homicide and driving under the influence, following a tragic crash on the city’s east side.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department received a call about a single-vehicle accident in the 8800 block of E. 10th Street around 1:30 a.m.
The passenger was tragically killed when the suspect lost control of his car while driving home on 10th Street and crashed into a ditch, according to the police.
“It’s absolutely shocking,” expressed Kayla Dukes, the sister of the victim. “The pain is unbearable. It feels like I can’t breathe, even though I am. It’s as if my legs have gone numb, yet I’m still here.”
Kayla expressed her sorrow for her sister Simone Pryor, who tragically passed away at the young age of 25. Simone leaves behind three young children, including a two-month-old baby boy. The loss of their mother’s positive outlook on life will undoubtedly impact their upbringing.
Dukes remembered how she always had a way of making things better. “Even on those days when everything seemed to be going wrong, she would simply tell me to step outside, take a breath of fresh air, and remind myself that it’s going to be okay,” Dukes said.
After the accident, the authorities took custody of Gareth Henderson Jr., the boyfriend of Pryor, who was the sole driver involved in the crash.
According to the evidence found at the scene, it appears that the suspect, who is 26 years old, veered off the road and collided with a concrete culvert. As a result of the impact, the vehicle overturned, causing Pryor to be thrown out of the car.
In the affidavit, Henderson confessed to consuming a few drinks, and the police assert that they detected the smell of alcohol on him. Additionally, they observed that his eyes were bloodshot and his speech was slurred.
The case serves as a reminder to everyone to be responsible behind the wheel, as emphasized by the police and the victim’s family.
IMP officer Tommy Thompson emphasized the importance of community responsibility.
Every year, over 13,000 individuals lose their lives in drunk driving accidents across the United States, as reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This alarming statistic is why IMPD strongly encourages individuals to prioritize planning ahead and making responsible choices when it comes to drinking and driving.
Thompson urged the community to take collective responsibility in preventing such incidents. “It takes all of us,” she emphasized. She advised individuals to consider using ride-share programs or appointing a designated sober driver to ensure safety.
Candles have been arranged to spell out Simone’s name, while flowers beautifully decorate the surroundings. Despite the tragic circumstances, Simone’s family holds no grudges against the suspect.
They have established a memorial fund in her honor to support her children and assist with expenses.
They also have the sincere hope that everyone will learn to drive while sober or refrain from driving altogether.
Dukes advised everyone to exercise caution in their actions and decisions.
Henderson is currently facing the following preliminary charges:
• Operating a vehicle under the influence resulting in a fatality — classified as a Level 4 Felony
• Reckless homicide is classified as a Level 5 Felony.
• Causing death or catastrophic injury while driving with a suspended license is classified as a Level 5 Felony.
Operating while intoxicated causing endangerment to a person is classified as a Class A Misdemeanor.
The suspect is currently in custody, with a cash bond of $20,000 in place, while formal charges are being prepared.
