Georgia Man Sentenced To 25 Years In Prison For Possessing A Gun And Over Three Pounds Of Drugs

Taft Cornelius Burtton has gone from Georgia to Iowa to a federal prison.

According to a news statement from the United States Attorney’s Office, the 32-year-old male from the metro Atlanta region was sentenced to 300 months (25 years) in prison for possessing a handgun and distributing large amounts of cocaine.

On April 20, 2023, law authorities in Iowa attempted a traffic stop, but Burton fled at almost 112 mph. After his vehicle was disabled, Burtton fled on foot. The vehicle contained over two pounds of meth and more than $42,000 in narcotics earnings.

In December of that year, officials raided Burtton’s residence in Des Moines, Iowa, and discovered 50 grams of fentanyl and crack, 150 grams of heroin and cocaine, more than half a pound of marijuana, and a loaded Ruger revolver. Burtton became a criminal after being convicted of supplying cocaine at a high school in 2016, and he is thus forbidden from possessing a firearm.

Burrton will be sentenced to five years of supervised release after his release. No parole is available.
