A border patrol agent from Minnesota has died in the line of duty

A tragic incident occurred on January 20, 2025, when a U.S. border patrol agent and proud Minnesota native lost his life while on duty in Mankato.

According to a statement from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, a 44-year-old man named David Maland was shot during a traffic stop near the Canadian border in Vermont. Customs officials have reported that one suspect was fatally wounded, while another suspect was apprehended and is currently receiving medical treatment in a hospital.

Maland’s family shared with the Associated Press that he was born and raised in Blue Earth and completed his education at Fairmont High School. They also revealed that he dedicated nine years to serving in the military and another 15 years working for the federal government. During his tenure, he played a crucial role in safeguarding the Pentagon during the tragic events of 9/11.

Customs records indicate that Maland is the first border agent to be killed in the line of duty since 2014.
