Weather Closures and Delays for Monday, January 20, 2025

The National Weather Service has issued a warning, urging residents to minimize their outdoor activities due to an upcoming period of extremely cold temperatures. According to the NWS, frostbite can occur within just 30 minutes in such conditions.

Because of the frigid temperatures, schools in southeastern Minnesota and northern Iowa face the tough decision of whether or not to cancel classes on Monday and Tuesday. Take a look at the latest closings below.

Brutal Conditions are Expected on Monday and Tuesday

Temperatures during the night will drop to below freezing, reaching as low as negative teens in certain regions. Wind chills are expected to plummet to as low as -35°F in some areas.

On Monday, temperatures will be slightly colder compared to Sunday, as highs are expected to struggle to reach 0°F. Additionally, wind chills will drop below zero, making it feel even colder.

Temperatures are expected to plummet even further on Monday night, with the coldest air hitting during the early hours of Tuesday morning. In some areas, wind chills could reach as low as -40°F.

The temperatures on Tuesday are forecasted to stay in the single digits, with wind chills expected to remain below zero until mid-week.

    • Byron Public Schools: E-Learning Day

Byron Public Schools will be closed on Monday, with both students and staff participating in an E-learning Day. However, Project Kids will remain open from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. tomorrow. Despite the closure, high school activities are still planned for tomorrow evening.

    • Riceville Community Schools: 2 Hour Late Start, No AM activities
    • Ridgeway Community School: Closed Monday – No Childcare
