US to Prohibit Smart Cars with Chinese and Russian Technology

The United States has officially implemented a rule on Tuesday, which effectively prohibits Chinese technology from being used in cars sold in the American market. This move specifically targets software and hardware originating from China, citing national security concerns.

As outgoing President Joe Biden concludes his efforts to tighten restrictions on Chinese-made technology, the announcement follows a lengthy regulatory process.

In addition, there has been an announcement this month that Washington is considering implementing new regulations to mitigate the risks associated with drones equipped with technology from countries like China and Russia.

According to Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, cars have evolved beyond being mere vehicles and are now considered as advanced computers. This statement was made in reference to a rule that specifically addresses Russian technology.

“We are implementing a focused strategy to prevent the inclusion of PRC and Russian-manufactured technologies on American roads,” she emphasized, specifically mentioning the People’s Republic of China.

According to National Economic Advisor Lael Brainard, China aims to establish dominance in the auto industry. However, the use of connected vehicles that incorporate software and hardware systems from foreign competitors raises concerns about potential misuse of sensitive data or interference.
