Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs has recently announced the allocation of $17.2 million to enhance the border security initiatives of local law enforcement agencies.
The Governor’s Office has announced that the funds will be used to support various important initiatives. These include border security work, drug interdiction efforts, and the fight against human trafficking.
The funds will be distributed among 27 agencies, encompassing sheriff’s offices and police departments throughout the state. The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office will receive the highest allocation, amounting to almost $2.8 million.
“I think that safety and security of our communities is a big priority for Arizonans,” Hobbs said. “I think that came through loud and clear in the election, and I’ve been focused on border security even before the election.”
Hobbs intends to request additional funding from the state Legislature this year to bolster Operation Secure. This program, initiated by her office, aims to offer assistance for border security efforts. This encompasses the deployment of National Guard troops to border communities to help intercept illegal drugs.
“Those are the kind of things that we should be working in partnership with federal agents on that provide real and meaningful security for our communities,” said Hobbs, who will release her proposed budget for the next fiscal year on Friday.
The Governor’s Office has announced that local law enforcement agencies will receive a $17 million award. This funding will be sourced from the current state budget, which is managed by the Department of Public Safety. The purpose of this award is to support local law enforcement’s border security efforts.
