Just before 10 p.m., the Gilbert police received a call regarding a collision at the American Orchards Senior Community, which is situated near Lindsay and Guadalupe roads. Following the accident, Joshua Michael Degolier, the 33-year-old driver, fled the scene before the arrival of the officers.
Mary Lillian Haapala, 88 years old, was discovered deceased within the premises, as confirmed by authorities.
Authorities believe that impairment played a role in the collision, although the investigation is still ongoing.
Upon arriving at the scene, Arizona’s Family crews observed a significant hole in the side of the building, cordoned off with crime scene tape. Additionally, a tow truck was in the process of removing the pickup truck.
“We express our profound sorrow over the heartbreaking loss of life and offer our sincerest condolences to her friends, family, and loved ones,” Gilbert police stated.
