A man from Lawndale has been accused of killing his girlfriend during their New Year’s celebration with the woman’s 18-year-old daughter on January 1. Martina Mosby, a 43-year-old woman, became the first homicide victim in Chicago in 2025.
Freeman, Mosby, and Mosby’s daughter were celebrating the new year at their home in the 1200 block of South Sawyer when the shooting incident took place. The couple, who had been dating for a decade, had been living together for the past two years.
According to Freeman’s detention order, during the celebration, Freeman, aged 38, discharged a firearm from the back porch of their home, followed by a few shots from Mosby’s daughter.
The couple subsequently got into a “brief argument,” and Freeman went to get a second pistol, according to the order. When he returned, he allegedly shot Mosby many times. Police discovered eleven round casings at the location that were “consistent with” the .40-caliber revolver that Freeman reportedly obtained before shooting Mosby.
Mosby was taken to a hospital by EMS, but unfortunately, she passed away shortly thereafter.
Freeman, on the other hand, quickly left the scene and concealed both firearms in a nearby trash can, as stated in the detention order. According to prosecutors, he also made an attempt to prevent Mosby’s daughter from contacting emergency services by calling 911.
Judge Shauna Boliker has issued a detention petition, which will keep Freeman in jail until his trial for first-degree murder.
In Cook County court records, Freeman has been involved in only one other criminal case. This incident occurred in 2017, where he faced charges of unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated assault. Interestingly, the case was dismissed shortly after the complainant failed to appear in court.
