Governor Josh Shapiro, Now The Second Highest-paid Governor In The U.S., Files Complaint Against PA Energy Provider

Governor Josh Shapiro’s salary has increased to almost $246,000 this year, as mandated by a state law that ensures automatic pay raises for state lawmakers, judges, and top executive branch officials.

According to the Associated Press, the Abington resident has now become the second highest-paid governor in the country, with only New York’s governor earning more. As a result of this decision, more than 1,300 officials, including all 253 lawmakers and all seven state Supreme Court justices, will receive a pay raise of 3.4%.

State officials have experienced a larger percentage increase in their earnings for the fourth consecutive year, as opposed to private sector workers, based on hourly earnings data.

In a recent development, Shapiro’s administration has taken action by filing a complaint this week with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission against PJM Interconnection, the power grid manager responsible for supplying Pennsylvania.

The complaint alleges that consumers could be faced with billions of dollars in costs due to the capacity auction practices of PJM Interconnection.

According to the coverage by the Pittsburgh Gazette:

In the complaint against PJM, Mr. Shapiro told FERC that if changes are not made to PJM’s approach to capacity auctions, there could be “over $20 billion in unnecessary energy costs for Pennsylvanians and consumers across the region.” PJM, in a statement late Monday, said it was fundamentally a supply-and-demand problem that is pushing up prices and a driver is “policy choices that are pushing resources off the system along with data center and electrification demand growth.”

PJM said it has been talking to the Shapiro administration and has made filings with FERC on potential system changes.
