18-year-old Apprehended After Man Shot Inside Castleton Square Mall

A shooting took place at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Monday. The injured man arrived at Eskenazi Hospital about an hour later, according to the police.

An 18-year-old suspect has been arrested by IMPD following a shooting that took place inside Castleton Square Mall on Monday evening. The incident occurred during a bustling holiday shopping period and resulted in a man being shot.

The arrested man is facing a preliminary charge of felony intimidation with a deadly weapon for his alleged participation in the shooting. However, according to the authorities, he is not believed to be the actual shooter.

According to a statement from an IMPD spokesperson, the arrest took place shortly after the incident. Detectives suspect that the individuals involved in the shooting were acquainted with each other and were engaged in a disturbance at the time.

The mall will be open on Christmas Eve from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., as planned.

Police responded to an urgent call at the mall, located near Interstate 465 on East 82nd Street, at approximately 8:30 p.m. on December 23. Off-duty officers, who were on security duty at the time, alerted the authorities. As a precautionary measure, the mall was promptly evacuated following the sound of gunfire.

According to a spokesperson from the department, they believe that shots were fired during a disturbance between individuals who were acquainted with each other.

Approximately one hour after the shooting at the mall, a man arrived at Eskenazi Hospital, located just west of downtown Indianapolis, with an apparent gunshot wound. Fortunately, no injuries were reported initially. The man, described as “stable” by the police, is believed to have been injured in the mall shooting.

According to the spokesperson, IMPD currently does not perceive any ongoing danger to public safety.

Damage from the shooting was discovered inside the mall, with a bullet hole found in a wall and another in an arcade machine. Investigators are currently reviewing surveillance video from the mall as part of their ongoing investigation.

IMPD Officer Tommy Thompson expressed his concern over the individuals who resorted to gun violence as a means of resolving their conflicts. He emphasized that such an approach is ineffective and does not bring about any positive outcomes. Officer Thompson highlighted the impact of these actions on families, particularly during the holiday season, and acknowledged the trauma experienced by those involved.

“This cannot continue to happen. It is simply not tolerable,” Thompson expressed firmly. “As the IMPD, we will persist in our efforts to collaborate with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, ensuring that these individuals are apprehended and held accountable for their actions. No one should ever have to endure such circumstances.”
