As the holiday season intensifies, the Chandler Police Department is urging residents to remain vigilant amidst a rise in a crime trend called “jugging.” This tactic involves criminals following unsuspecting victims from banks or stores, waiting for an opportunity to rob them at their next stop.
Although Chandler police emphasize that this warning is precautionary rather than indicative of a local surge, the crime has seen a nationwide increase. Sgt. Ricky Gonzales noted to FOX 10 Phoenix, “This isn’t a significant uptick for Chandler, but we’re proactively spreading awareness to help our community stay safe.”
Jugging often catches victims off guard, with criminals typically waiting until they reach their vehicle or another location to strike. Detective Eva Zermeno of Chandler PD’s media relations team highlighted key safety measures to reduce the risk of becoming a target. “Always be aware of your surroundings, secure your valuables, and, if possible, shop with a buddy,” she advised. She also stressed the importance of calling 911 if individuals feel unsafe or suspect they’re being followed.
Sgt. Gonzales further urged shoppers to minimize risks by avoiding leaving expensive items, cash, or firearms in vehicles, especially during the busy shopping season. “If you suspect someone is following you, do not hesitate to contact law enforcement immediately,” he added.
As the holiday rush continues, Chandler authorities hope these proactive measures will help residents stay safe and deter potential criminal activity.
