Manhattan Teenager Jiniye Hooks Sentenced To 20 Years In Prison For Fatal East Harlem Shooting Of 14-year-old

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr. sentenced 19-year-old Jiniye Hooks to 20 years to life in state prison for the 2022 East Harlem shooting that killed 14-year-old Justin Streeter and injured a 15-year-old boy.

On a July afternoon, a confrontation led to Hooks discharging a firearm multiple times at two boys who had just left a local deli; DA Bragg described the incident as a horrific act of gun violence, and in their effort to escape, Hooks’s bullet struck Streeter in the back of the head, while the second teen was shot in the leg but managed to find refuge down the street, the 14-year-old’s life tragically ending at a hospital soon after; Hooks pleaded guilty to one count of

“A 14-year-old child died as a result of this horrific act of gun violence,” said District Attorney Bragg. “The entire community adored Mr. Streeter, not just his family.” Regrettably, his promising future came to an abrupt end, leaving his loved ones reeling in grief. “There is nothing we can do to undo the pain they are experiencing, but I hope this lengthy prison sentence allows them to move forward and close this difficult chapter,” according to the District Attorney’s Office.

Assistant District Attorneys Michael McIntosh and Matthew Sears oversaw the prosecution of the case, with support from other key legal and law enforcement officials, among them Senior Trial Counsel Peter Casolaro and Supervising Major Case Analyst Sasha Hodson. Detectives Edward Stackpole, Michael Jeanbart, and Sasha Hodson received special recognition for their activities and coordination in successfully bringing Hooks to justice.
