A detention officer in Texas was fatally assaulted by a man being held in jail. The incident occurred when the officer was escorting the inmate back to his cell after his one-hour daily release. The sheriff provided this information on Tuesday.
Isaiah Patrick Bias, a 28-year-old employee of the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office for more than six years, was attacked on Monday afternoon at the county jail in Waxahachie, located south of Dallas. During a press conference held on Tuesday, Sheriff Brad Norman shared that Arron Semeion Thompson, a 45-year-old resident of nearby Ennis, has been charged with capital murder in connection with Bias’ tragic death.
“Most of the time, law enforcement officers and detention officers deal with good folks having a bad day. Occasionally, we deal with bad folks,” Norman said. “I can honestly say that my staff, over the last day, has dealt with pure evil.”
Norman described Bias as someone who prioritized their family and was deeply cherished by their colleagues.
“He was one of the kind of guys who if you needed help, he’d come help you,” Norman said.
Thompson has been in jail since last month on charges of assaulting a public servant, public intoxication, and evading arrest, according to officials.
Thompson was assigned a $2 million bond in connection with Bias’ death. There is no attorney listed for him in jail records.
Norman mentioned that the Texas Rangers will conduct an investigation.
