Johnwann Elliott, aged 31, entered a guilty plea on December 16th for charges of second-degree murder while armed and attempted assault with a dangerous weapon. The incident took place in 2022, resulting in the tragic killing of Nikia Young, aged 37. This information was confirmed by the US Attorney’s Office.
Elliott has reached a plea deal that includes a 21-year prison sentence, to be followed by five years of supervised release, subject to court approval.
Investigators state that Elliott got off a Metro bus at the intersection of Minnesota Avenue and White Place SE around midnight on March 15, 2022. Shortly thereafter, he approached Young and another individual at the same intersection of Minnesota Avenue and 23rd Street SE. In broad daylight, Elliott brandished a .380-caliber handgun and proceeded to fire at close range.
He has been in custody since his arrest on May 19, 2022, at a hotel in Northeast DC.
During the murder investigation, it was observed that Elliott was released pending trial for unauthorized use of a vehicle and was also under supervised release due to a previous conviction for robbery.
Officials have announced that the sentencing has been scheduled for March 14, 2025.
