Leader of Los Zetas and ex-boss of Gulf Cartel sent back to Mexico after deportation

Osiel Cardenas Guillen, the former leader of the Gulf Cartel and the mastermind behind the infamous Los Zetas, has been extradited.

On Monday, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) disclosed that Cardenas, aged 57, has been deported to Mexico through the San Diego Port of Entry. He was handed over to the Mexican authorities who seek him for charges related to homicide and illegal possession of a firearm.

Cardenas has recently completed a lengthy prison term for his involvement in drug trafficking, making threats against federal officials and their families, as well as engaging in money laundering. He was found guilty and convicted in 2010.

Los Zetas was established by the former capo as the armed wing of the Gulf Cartel.

In 2012, the split within Los Zetas escalated into a major conflict, culminating in the death of Heriberto Lazcano, the group’s leader.

During the period between Cardenas’ arrests and Lazcano’s death, there were several instances of open fighting occurring in broad daylight in Matamoros and Reynosa, as well as in the areas between them.

In addition, there were multiple cases where other cartel leaders entered the United States to avoid their adversaries. Instead of risking death in Mexico, they opted to confront prosecution and serve lengthy prison sentences in the U.S.

According to a news release by ICE, in 2022, an immigration detainer was placed on Cardenas by the agency.

Samuel Olson, an ICE official based in Chicago, emphasized that Cardenas’ deportation is an example of the agency’s dedication to ensuring public safety.

In a statement, Olson emphasized the significance of successfully apprehending Osiel Cardenas, an infamous international fugitive. This accomplishment highlights our steadfast dedication to upholding public safety and ensuring justice prevails.

ICE officials in Chicago, San Diego, Harlingen, and Mexico City coordinated the operation.

Olson expressed that by deporting this dangerous individual to Mexico, where he is facing serious charges, they have successfully taken a significant action in protecting our communities and maintaining the integrity of the law.
