A man lost his life on Monday morning following a series of reckless driving incidents that culminated in a multi-vehicle crash on Hunt Highway in Pinal County.
According to the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), 52-year-old Steven Berbaum was observed driving erratically around 8 a.m., speeding, swerving, and nearly running other vehicles off the road. A deputy later spotted Berbaum near Oasis Lane, northwest of the HonorHealth Florence Medical Center. As the deputy attempted to pull him over, Berbaum reportedly drove into oncoming traffic, triggering a rollover crash involving four additional vehicles.
Berbaum was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries. Fortunately, only one other driver sustained minor injuries in the collision.
The crash caused a significant disruption, with Hunt Highway near Oasis Lane closed in both directions between Heritage and Arizona Farms for more than seven hours. The road was finally reopened around 4:30 p.m. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, which serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of reckless driving.
