The Arizona Department of Health Services has confirmed two human cases of avian influenza, marking a rare occurrence in the state. Both individuals, who were exposed to infected poultry while working in Pinal County, experienced mild symptoms. They received prompt treatment and have since recovered fully.
Will Humble, former director of the Department of Health Services, reassured the public, emphasizing that these cases were not transmitted from person to person. “The real concern would arise if we observed human-to-human transmission of the virus, which hasn’t occurred,” Humble stated. He added that the patients are likely being closely monitored to ensure no further developments.
The cases come as no surprise, given the recent increase in avian flu infections among poultry and livestock workers in neighboring California. The virus can cause a range of symptoms, from mild respiratory issues to severe pneumonia and, in extreme cases, death.
While Arizona’s reported cases appear to be isolated, health officials continue to monitor the situation to prevent further spread.
