John Anthony Hancock, a 42-year-old from Virginia, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison followed by 5 years of probation after pleading guilty to manslaughter in the death of 84-year-old Theresa Evelyn Bogu. Judge Stephen E. Toner’s courtroom received the plea earlier today, according to the Fifth Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office. The incident happened on June 15, 2021, when Hernando County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a battery report at a business off Commercial Way in Spring Hill. Bogue reported to officials that a guy had assaulted her with his fist, causing her to fall and strike her head, which was supported by another witness. The local hospital discovered a brain bleed in her. The identification of Hancock was based on surveillance footage and a motel transaction. Authorities in Virginia questioned him after he initially denied being in Florida, leading him to acknowledge the altercation. An arrest warrant for Hancock led to his extradition to Florida. Bogue died on April 2, 2022, of consequences from blunt injuries experienced during the attack, according to medical examiners.According to the Fifth Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office, assistant state attorneys Robert Lewis and Kasey Whitson prosecuted the case.
