Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin and Ohio Senator J.D. Vance have teamed up to pass a bill aimed at safeguarding taxpayer-funded inventions from being produced in foreign countries.
The U.S. Senate unanimously passed the bipartisan legislation called the ‘Invent Here, Make Here Act’ on Wednesday.
The bill prohibits the manufacturing of federally funded inventions in countries that are considered “countries of concern,” such as China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran.
“I’ve fought for years to ensure that when we invest taxpayer dollars, we’re investing in American businesses and workers. For too long, taxpayer funded inventions have been shipped overseas for production in places like China, benefitting their economy and compromising our national security,” said Sen. Baldwin.
According to Baldwin, this bill aims to boost job creation and bolster local economies by prioritizing American businesses and workers in the production of these innovations.
The House of Representatives is the next hurdle for the legislation.
