The US Justice Department announced on Thursday that a high-ranking member of a Mexican drug cartel, who is accused of faking his own death, is now facing federal charges. This individual has been living in California under an assumed name.
The 37-year-old Gutierrez-Ochoa, also known as “Guacho,” faces charges of international drug trafficking and money laundering.
Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco stated on Thursday that the Jalisco Cartel, known for its violent and extensive drug trafficking activities, has been significantly weakened. This is the result of the relentless efforts of law enforcement to apprehend a cartel leader who allegedly faked his own death and adopted a fake identity in order to escape justice and live a luxurious life in California.
Before going into hiding, Gutierrez-Ochoa is believed to have personally organized the transportation and distribution of 40,000 kilograms of methamphetamine and 2,000 kilograms of cocaine from Mexico to the United States. In addition, he is accused of kidnapping two members of the Mexican Navy in an effort to free his mother-in-law, who is El Mencho’s wife, following her arrest by Mexican authorities.
Gutierrez-Ochoa appeared to maintain a cautious approach while evading capture for over a year. According to federal authorities, there is evidence to suggest that he even conducted counter-surveillance on federal agents who were monitoring his activities. The Department of Justice, in its recent announcement, did not provide further details about the circumstances surrounding Gutierrez-Ochoa’s arrest, only mentioning that he was apprehended on Tuesday.
In 2022, the Justice Department brought charges against El Mencho for his alleged leadership in the production and distribution of fentanyl with the intention of smuggling it into the United States. It is important to note that El Mencho has not been apprehended yet, and the State Department has announced a reward of up to $10 million for any information that could lead to his capture and/or conviction.
