A patient has accused a doctor of rape, leading to charges being filed against the doctor by the Johnson City Police Department in Tennessee.
Dr. Atif Atyia, a 68-year-old resident of Jonesborough, is facing charges of aggravated rape and three counts of sexual battery.
The JCPD Special Victims Unit launched an investigation on February 19, following a report from a patient who claimed to have been raped during an office visit under the care of Dr. Atyia.
The police carried out a search warrant at Atyia’s practice on West Market Street. Both the JCPD and the Office of the District Attorney General collaborated on the case and presented it to the Washington County grand jury this week. Subsequently, the grand jury issued a true bill.
At the moment, Atyia is currently being held at the Washington County Detention Center on a bond amounting to $50,000.
If you believe you may have been a victim, please reach out to Sgt. Shane Williams at the JCPD Special Victims Unit by calling (423) 434-6110.
