Earlier this month, law enforcement agencies in southern Arizona conducted a multi-agency investigation that resulted in the seizure of a large quantity of ammunition.
Two different SUVs traveling east on Interstate 10 from the Phoenix area were found to be carrying the ammunition.
The Pinal County Sheriff’s office intercepted a vehicle carrying 7.62×39 ammunition.
At a Motel 6 in Benson, the Cochise County Counter Narcotics and Trafficking Alliance (CNTA) investigators made another discovery. They found a second vehicle containing .50 caliber ammunition. Alongside the ammunition, detectives also found two individuals at the motel. One of them was an asylum seeker from Cuba, while the other was a U.S. citizen hailing from Texas.
Investigators from the CNTA, in collaboration with the Homeland Security Investigations and the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, confiscated a total of 10,000 rounds of .50 caliber ammunition and 19,640 rounds of 7.62×39 ammunition.
Officials have not disclosed the origin of the two individuals who occupied the second vehicle.
The authorities have not disclosed any additional information at this time. They are continuing their investigation into the matter.
