According to authorities, two individuals lost their lives and eight others sustained injuries as the year 2025 commenced with a series of slashings, stabbings, and two shootings in New York City.
A 50-year-old man was discovered with a slashed neck at the intersection of West 137th Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard in Harlem at around 4:20 a.m., marking the first homicide of the year, according to authorities.
The police announced that he was taken to Harlem Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities said that they have taken a 39-year-old man, who is considered a person of interest, into custody for questioning.
Authorities are currently investigating the motive behind the attack.
Around an hour later, tragedy struck again as Mario Fowler, a 46-year-old man, was fatally shot in front of an apartment building on East 170th Street near Clay Avenue in the Claremont Village section of the Bronx. During the incident, a 23-year-old man was also injured, according to the police.
Fowler, who suffered gunshot wounds in both legs, was able to flee to his nearby building and seek help. A bystander quickly dialed 911, alerting the authorities to the situation.
Authorities said that he was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital in a rush, but unfortunately, he did not survive his injuries.
According to the authorities, the younger victim was discovered just around the corner with a minor wound on his chin.
The intended target remains unclear for both individuals.
Authorities have not made any arrests in relation to the tragic shooting incident.
Three men, aged 26, 27, and 30, were attacked in a violent incident that occurred on Grand Street near Roebling Street in Williamsburg, according to the police. The assailants slashed the victims on their heads around 4:50 a.m.
The individuals were transported to Woodhull Medical Center, where their condition was reported as stable.
The reason behind those slashings remains unclear.
At around 1 a.m., following the iconic ball drop in Times Square, a 51-year-old man was stabbed in the stomach during a confrontation at the intersection of 38th Street and 8th Avenue, according to the police.
He was transported to Bellevue Hospital, where medical professionals classified his condition as stable.
In the early hours of the morning, a confrontation between two men occurred at West 49th Street and Eighth Avenue. During the altercation, one man was stabbed in the stomach, while the other was stabbed in the hand. Authorities have reported this incident to the police.
In broad daylight, the violence persisted as a 40-year-old man fell victim to a gunshot wound in the neck. The incident occurred at approximately 1 p.m. right outside St. James Park on Grand Concourse, close to East 192nd Street, according to authorities.
After the incident, he was immediately transported to St. Barnabas Hospital for medical treatment. Fortunately, his condition was deemed stable upon arrival.
The police are still investigating the motive behind the incident, but no arrests have been made yet.
